I've been meaning to post this for a looooonnng time, but just remembered it now. Normally Rap music is NOT something that wild Paleclouds like, but the idea of Stephen Hawking rapping is, well, strange and amusing. I should probably add that true to form, many of the song lyrics are explicit (which may induce wincing, as is has with tafyrn and myself).

DOS vs Mac

Excerpted from an essay written by Umberto Eco:

The fact is that the world is divided between users of the Macintosh computer and users of MS-DOS compatible computers. I am firmly of the opinion that the Macintosh is Catholic and that DOS is Protestant. Indeed, the Macintosh is counter-reformist and has been influenced by the ratio studiorum of the Jesuits. It is cheerful, friendly, conciliatory; it tells the faithful how they must proceed step by step to reach -- if not the kingdom of Heaven -- the moment in which their document is printed. It is catechistic: The essence of revelation is dealt with via simple formulae and sumptuous icons. Everyone has a right to salvation.

DOS is Protestant, or even Calvinistic. It allows free interpretation of scripture, demands difficult personal decisions, imposes a subtle hermeneutics upon the user, and takes for granted the idea that not all can achieve salvation. To make the system work you need to interpret the program yourself: Far away from the baroque community of revelers, the user is closed within the loneliness of his own inner torment.

This is pretty funny.

One thing I find interesting is how, despite how secular Western culture has become, some people still tend to label things as "Catholic" and "Protestant" (especially "Calvinistic" or "Puritannical", etc.), or having these attributes.

I wanted to show tafyrn the kitty cat dance song (and I meow meow meow!), and as usual we meandered, and found this along the way:

That is so weird. Despite all the references to things we just didn't understand (a lot of stuff just zips over our heads), the song itself had us in stitches for hours, and the bizarre reference to Star Trek was just too much.

It turns out that the song was apparently a world-wide sensation a few years back, and that a few opera singers even got together and did a rendition. This rendition also had us in even more stitches. It seems as if this thing has been all over the internet, and somehow, we completely missed it.

It has been hard to breathe here on the eastern edge of Los Angeles County, and visibility is low at times. Occasionally, tiny flakes of ash fall from the sky.

The humidity here, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration website, is 11%.

Santa Ana winds are a classic aspect of Southern California weather, and tafyrn and I, among many others, hope that the current situation improves soon.

In the times ahead, we all should seriously plan for and think of the future. It is typically dry here, and considering the ongoing drought on top of that, the Santa Ana conditions will return, and the danger of fire will continue.
